Las Meninas is the most famous and iconic painting by Diego Velazquez. This picture is an illusion, a mirror, and even an autobiography.

The strength of Velazquez's creativity lies in the depths of psychological analysis and the uniquely communicated characters. In his portraits, he did not flatter the models but represented each in individual originality. The ingenuity of the Velazquez method manifested itself in emotional restraint, which revealed an integral unity of the essential character traits of the person’s spiritual and mental structures with all their complexity and contradictions.

The gray tones of his paintings shimmer in many shades and the blacks are light and transparent. The fright tones are warm, blue ones are cold and the dark ones are almost always illuminated by a steady light and form restrained subtle harmonies.

"Las Meninas" is one of the most well-known works in the collection of the Prado Museum. It is deliberately placed very low on the wall - so that the viewer is almost on par with the characters. That’s how the viewer feels as part of the masterpiece.

Though the plot of Las Meninas is multi-faceted, it can be interpreted. The 5-year-old Infanta came to the artist's workshop, accompanied by her retinue. She wanted to see how a portrait of her parents, the royal couple, was created.

Velazquez depicted this scene unexpectedly uniquely. Half of the characters seem to be looking at us. But in reality, they are looking at the king and queen, whom Velazquez is drawing. Therefore, he stands next to the canvas. We learn this fact from the mirror behind the artist. It reflects images of Philip IV and his wife Mariana of Austria.

Velazquez has done an amazing thing here. The point of view of Las Meninas is that of the king and queen, and every future viewer. That is how the artist allures the viewer as much as possible into the space of the picture and significantly expands it. In the background, Don José Nieto Velázquez opened the door as he probably let in the infanta. "Las Meninas" resembles a portal between two worlds, connecting the world on the picture with our reality.

Velazquez managed to depict the infanta’s retinue, including dwarfs. Nobody was allowed such impudence before him, and Velazquez didn’t stop there. He portrayed himself next to the king's family. None of the royal artists dared to do such a thing before. Velázquez put himself in the atmosphere, which for 30 years has been the content of his life. Being a part of this reality, he was also its creator. That’s why “Las Meninas” is both Velasquez’s best autobiography and his manifesto about the artist’s place in society.

For three hundred years, scientists and art historians have been trying to solve Las Meninas’ secrets. The French philosopher Michel Foucault was said to adore this picture and train his mind examining it.

It is interesting that the paintings on the back wall of the picture are recognized as Minerva Punishing Arachne and Apollo's Victory Over Marsyas. Both stories involve Minerva, the Goddess of Wisdom and patron of the arts.

According to art critic Dawson Carr, the elusive essence of Las Meninas suggests the illusory nature of both art and life itself. The relationship between reality and illusion was one of the central problems in Spanish culture of the 17th century.

Papier- mâché is an ancient art that has not lost its popularity. If you try this type of creative activity, you’ll find a source of inspiration for new masterpieces!

Papier-mâché (or paper mache) is a simple technique for making voluminous objects using paper and paste. Even with the advent of various plastic masses, papier-mâché does not lose its popularity, remaining indispensable for some types of creativity (for example, making masks).

The papier-mâché technique has been tested by time because its history goes back several thousand years! The ancient Egyptians made death masks using layers of papyrus interlaced with an adhesive substance. In Persia, decorative items, including chests and cups, were made from multi-layer paper. Often, thin metal plates were applied over the paper layer.

The durability of papier-mâché items, with a large number of layers, was noticed in ancient China. Repeated coating with natural varnishes added more strength to the material. In addition, in Japan and China, ceremonial masks, decorative elements for a military costume, home decor items and even buttons were made of this material.

From the 17th century, papier-mâché became actively used in France, and then in England, in the puppet business - this technique helped to perfectly reproduce the subtle features of puppet faces. Unlike porcelain, the finished papier-mâché product was not fragile, and it was also much lighter than wood.

In the 18th century, papier-mâché became an inexpensive alternative to architectural stucco and carved wood, and later this technique was used for the manufacturing of furniture and church utensils.

To date, papier-mâché is widely used in filmmaking and theater for the production of props (models of various things: weapons, dishes, jewelry, interior items or architectural structures), elements of makeup (noses, chins), stage costume parts (headgears, masks).

As already noted, papier-mâché is a very economical form of creativity. The main need for papier-mâché is paper and glue (PVA, gelatin or starch paste). There are two fundamentally different versions of this technique:
- pieces of paper layers are glued to the finished form;
- paper and glue are used to prepare an elastic mass from which the object is formed.

It is about the second version of creating with paper mache that Jonni Good talks in her video. However, she improved this method and introduced a completely new approach to it. Jonni Good is an author and creative artist. She's the host of the popular sculpting website UltimatePaperMache, where she shares her innovative methods, ideas, and recipes with a worldwide audience. Her goal is to make sculpting so easy that everyone can have fun doing it.

Norman Rockwell is an amazing artist of the 20th century. He didn’t just draw, he told whole stories and always portrayed heroes with unusual warmth and sympathy, seasoning pictures with a fair amount of humor.

American artist, Norman Percevel Rockwell was born in 1894 in New York. He gained immense popularity thanks to his astonishing artworks and his collaboration with The Saturday Evening Post. The artist had been illustrating its cover for forty years.

In his teens, he entered the New York School of Art. Later, he moved to the National Academy of Design, and then became a member of the Art Students League creative association. Being very young, the artist, nevertheless, worked successfully, taking orders for illustrations, postcards, and other design activities.

Reaching 21, Rockwell organized his own studio, which almost immediately received orders from such famous publications as Life, Literary Digest, and others.

Norman Rockwell achieved incredible fame. He was one of the most successful illustrators of our time. In his paintings, Rockwell, with striking realism, portrayed the world, filled with kindness and warmth. This was the world most people want it to be.

In the forties, inspired by Franklin D. Roosevelt’s speech of Four Freedoms, Norman Rockwell created the series “American Freedoms”, the exhibitions of which brought him about 130 million dollars. All this money Norman donated for military needs, so strong was his civil liability. His canvases can light the hearts of people in the darkest times. “Freedom from Fear” has become one of the cult paintings of the post-war time - a warm and peaceful evening when parents put their children to bed. Rockwell thus expressed freedom from fear, inspired by Roosevelt's speech about " a worldwide reduction of armaments to such a point and in such a thorough fashion that no nation will be in a position to commit an act of physical aggression against any neighbor—anywhere in the world."

Norman Rockwell didn’t just paint American life. He preached human values, he raised hope and faith in the national idea, he showed the importance of a smile and good nature, and mutual aid and decency were in the forefront in his masterpieces.

With an incredible ability to work, Norman Rockwell created 4,000 paintings. A gifted narrator, Rockwell rarely painted pictures from his imagination. He had his own method of work - the producer’s method! The most difficult, the artist admitted, was to choose an idea that would be interesting to both a housewife and a politician. When the plot was found, Rockwell started looking for models; often they were members of his family, friends, or neighbors. The artist carefully thought out the costumes and decor, and for a long time he searched for poses of his “characters”.

One of his best-known works is about Christmas. Nothing depicts family values better then this picture. To make “Christmas Homecoming” truly alive, Rockwell pictured his own family - we can see him on the right side with the usual pipe in his teeth. In the center - his adult son, who returned home for the Christmas holidays in a strong maternal embrace.

His picture Saying Grace (1951) is imbued with the spirit of post-war America. Painting it, the artist wanted to answer questions that were vital for people at that time. How, after going through violence and cruelty, to keep faith in kindness? Where to find the strength to look at the future with hope?

This work has become the most expensive work of American realistic art - in 2013, it was sold for $ 46 million.

In 1977, Rockwell was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom: his son Jarvis accepted it.

Media art is a technically and methodologically extremely hybrid form of art that is intensively developing along with the evolution of technology.

Media art includes several genres that differ depending on the type of technology used and the form of works presentation: video art, sound art, media installation (sometimes also media sculpture), media performance and many others.

Video artworks, thanks to video technology development, continue its attempts to leave the image out of the frame. In contrast to film, the video combines image and sound, connects them, shows reality more holistic than a movie camera.

Artists have always wanted to push the boundaries. In the 1960s, a portable video camera appeared, and Sony provided it free of charge to Andy Warhol and Nam June Pike for experimentation. This event inspired artists incredibly, starting a new era in video art.

In America in the 1960s, Nam June Paik, Andy Warhol, Steina and Woody Vasulka filmed alternative culture in the street or in the studio. Later, the same trend appeared in Central and Eastern Europe. A wonderful project “100 best works of video art of Central and Eastern Europe” clearly demonstrated that the development of video art was a phasic process that began with escaping from reality with the help of avant-garde alternative culture. The video allowed preserving the experiments of that time, which took place both in the theater and in music. When the alternative part faded into the background, video art went a different way, showing the world around sometimes as dissonant, sometimes harmonic.

Video art is a great opportunity to express in different ways how a person sees and perceives the world around. Video art gives you the possibility to show it at 360 degrees. We can see through space and the video camera makes it possible to convey this. Video as technology allows you to get closer to a person, deepening the knowledge of the psychology of human relationships. Filmmakers were carried away by video technology, trying, probing, and experimenting, shooting movies in unusual locations or showing complex psychological states. Lars von Trier shot the film "Idiot" on a video camera because simply shooting it with a movie camera was not enough for the director.

One of the most fascinating video artists working today is Gillian Wearing whose videos investigate dynamics and voyeurism in everyday life. Douglas Gordon covers dualities such as good and evil, confession and deception in his video works. Pipilotti Rist creates video installations and one of his best is Worry Will Vanish Horizon, a kaleidoscopic and disorienting journey inside the human body.

In video art, artists treat technology not only as a means of expression, but they are also actively using it as opposed to those, who simply create effects with it. The video is not just a technology for effects, it is a new art language that expresses the thoughts of the artist and decodes our space. Thus, a poetization of language and space and expansion in different directions are the main concepts in video art.

There is no exact answer to the question when the first sand sculpture appeared. There is a hypothesis that the ancient Egyptians made copies of the future pyramids from sand. Unlike real ones, sand sculptures are very short-lived, because the main building materials are sand and water.

Building sand sculptures has its own nuances. The fact is that sand is not stable when it is wet. On the other hand, dry sand crumbles. According to BBC's Coast program, the ideal ratio for building sand castles is 8 parts of dry sand to 1 part of water.

In recent decades, the manufacture of sand sculptures has become so popular that it has practically passed into the category of art. Now, various festivals dedicated to sand sculptures are being organized. Despite all the variety of art pieces, the method is always the same: sand and water. Creating a sand sculpture is difficult and painstaking work. No additional frame structures and fixing means are used in creating sand masterpieces.

Since 1989, the World Sand Sculptures Championship has been held in Canada. This contest includes different team categories.

The highest sand sculpture in the world is a castle 15.1 meters high that was built on Myrtle Beach.

In recent years, many artisans have organized their business specifically aimed at creating sand sculptures. Such activity has found a market niche with various clients looking to promote some product or just to surprise their customers at special events. While for most of these businessmen this is not a major activity, some companies specialize in it.

The most creative sand sculpture festivals all around the world are: The Sand Sculpting Competition and Exhibition in Canada, European Championship Sand Sculpture Festival, Zandvoort aan Zee in Netherlands, Sand Sculpture Festival and Weston-Super-Mare in UK, just to name a few.

The roots of the development of modern festivals of snow and ice sculptures lie far in the past. It is very difficult to say exactly where the ice and snow sculpture originated because the area of the globe covered by snow is very large. There are suggestions that Japan was the first country where ice sculpture was born. Be that as it may, all the snow and ice sculpture festivals were timed to coincide with the holidays and were accompanied by mass celebrations.

Ice sculptures amaze with their elegance and fabulousness. You can create almost anything from ice, and in the sunlight, your work will shine like the purest rock crystal. However, if the weather is not sunny, you can make special highlights so that the sculpture pleases one’s eye in the winter twilight.

With the development of the Internet and social networks, the artist loses his monopoly on the artistic statement itself. This is a very serious process that many are afraid to pay attention to. This process changes the value of the art system in society.

A meme is a unit of cultural information. It can be any phrase, idea, symbol, image or sound that is communicated from person to person. The whole mechanism of the emergence of a meme is built on the process of imitation. As a unit of cultural information, a meme does not depend on a specific situation. In practice, this is manifested in cases where the same meme is used to explain very different situations.

At the same time, the meme is an integral part of the art. The Internet meme, in particular, is nothing but a kind of network folklore.

The study of memes as a phenomenon has been the subject of many scientists since the 1970s. In 1976, English scientist Richard Dawkins published the book The Selfish Gene, which marked the birth of memetics as a science. The term "meme" appears in Dawkins' works as an analogy with the "gene" in genetics.

The concept of the meme is developed in the works of another scientist, Douglas Rushkoff, who transferred it to the media space. Rashkoff is the author of the book Mediavirus, which describes how pop culture affects our minds. He developed Dawkins’ ideas and outlined the notion of memes in a media environment.

Memes are created and distributed by people. A meme, in its broad sense, can be anything, any element of popular culture, any popular brand, a line from a song or a famous person.

The memes have many classifications. They can be divided according to various signs. For example, according to the mode of origin we distinguish:

deliberately created;
co-opted;
self-generated memes

Internet memes are surely an art object of modern folklore. They have a personalized content character. Memes can hold misprints, various homophones, etc. Such a personalized and “socially pointed” meme’s nature connects it with the tradition of “parlor jokes” and even with an ordinary anecdote.
On the one hand, anonymous Internet creativity is increasingly invading the territory of modern art, on the other hand, modern artists are more often turning to the Internet for inspiration and draw ideas from it, sometimes passing it off as their own.

Nowadays, it becomes difficult for an artist to compete with a huge army of Internet users armed with digital cameras, text and graphics editors and broadband Internet.

Having an enormous impact on people, taking not only themes and visual images away from the "professional" art, but also the audience, Internet culture makes the institution of art once again rethink itself and its objectives in society.

Nowadays, a relatively new trend is gaining more popularity in modern art – recycled art, which is based on the transformation of old, used items of everyday life into new art objects. Recycled art is an "alternative art", a protest against patterns and rules. From the point of view of preserving the environment, it is similar to eco-art.

Modern society is accustomed to consumption, not realizing that the resources of the planet are not infinite. A lot of household items are disposed of. However, these things can serve further if they are be used in creating new art objects.

Recycled art aims at reducing the negative impact of various types of waste on the environment, and therefore it can be viewed as a global environmental movement. Its main principles are the saving of natural resources and maximal economy of materials. It seeks the reduction of excess quantity of products, material and technology revision, as well as changes in consumer requirements.

Recycled art, like eco-art, is also concerned about the complete elimination of the detrimental environmental impact of household waste. It is seriously considering the utilization of alternative resources and energy and the maximum cost savings.

The objectives of recycled art are the improvement of the existing ecological situation, review of materials and technologies in terms of environmental norms and purposeful change in the values of the society by means of artistic images of design objects.

The entertainment and symbolic significance invested by the authors are essential components of the success of virtually any contemporary art project. However, the works of recycled art also feature a subtle artistic flair, thanks to which these works are a response to the problems of the modern day, and express an actual and understandable idea with accessible means.

Recycled art projects are numerous. Recycling garbage into art objects helps to save natural resources, as well as significantly reduces the degree of pollution of the environment. The creativity of the recycled artists shows a reaction to the global problems of urban civilization.

For example, the creativity of the Brazilian artist V. Muniz is concentrated directly on the problem of the constant growth of landfills. He is often called an ecologist and a person who is struggling with traditional prejudices. The use of non-standard materials in his works attracted much attention of the society to V. Muniz’s activity. The great impact of music on a person and the world around does not cease to excite those who are consciously treating their life as a gift and seeking to fill this life with divine sounds.

Music is a force that can be used both for blessing and evil. It has long been known that music is a factor that sets the direction for the development of civilization. Let’s consider how we are influenced by the basic components of music.

Rhythm has the strongest and most direct effect on our body. Every part of our body possesses its own rhythm: breathing, heartbeat, brainwork, various movements and activities even at the level of cells and molecules.

Melody affects the listener especially intensely and diversely. The melody awakens images, feelings, and beliefs, greatly influencing all vital functions of human organism.

Harmony is built by simultaneously played sounds, which form chords. Due to the various vibrations emitted by these chords, listeners can experience either a feeling of harmony or dissonance.

Anyone with a musical ear can feel the charm of a flute or cello, harp or violin differently. The composer, skillfully combining instruments of various timbre in the orchestra, can bring a huge audience to the frenzy. However, frequency plays the most important role in perceiving the music.
In musical history, the 432 Hertz frequency has always been used to tune musical instruments. Discovered ancient Egyptian instruments were tuned to 432 Hz. Tibetan singing bowls have the same frequency. Moreover, Antonio Stradivari created his masterpieces tuned to 432 Hertz.
Mozart, Verdi, and many other musicians tuned their music to this frequency because of the healing energy it evoked in the audience.

In 1953, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) adopted the “LA” 440 Hz, as the tuning standard. Despite numerous protests from musicians and composers, this standard remains the same nowadays.

440 hertz is the frequency that most strongly affects the human brain and evokes fear and aggression. The frequency of 440 hertz stimulates the certain brain areas, “convenient” for setting up various programs. On the contrary, the frequencies from 430 to 435 Hertz allow you to calmly and deliberately perceive the music feeling its healing and meditative effect.

Music should be perceived much broader than just a set of sounds. Many of us want to “wake up” our own vibrations in order to be able to open up to the new energies of the world, goodness, love, abundance. An important step towards this is the awareness of what kind of music we listen to and what impact it has on our body. When choosing musical works, it is advised to track your own reaction and mark observations. You need to be more selective about music and pay attention to your reactions in the form of emotions, thoughts and feelings that a particular melody triggers in your soul.
